Sharon Lee TanachionAugust 6, 1940 ~ September 21, 2017 (age 77)
Sharon was born August 6, 1940, in Borger Texas. She was the first of four daughters, born to Guy and Martha (Mallory) Sawyer. Sharon was barely 14 inches long and weighed only 4 pounds, she was so small her first crib was a dresser drawer.
While she was still an infant she moved to Claremore Oklahoma, where her “granny” Maude Mallory lived. It is there, her first sister Janice (Souza) was born.
When their dad and uncles left to serve in World War II, all the family was held together by granny and their one uncle, Wayne, who was left behind to care for the family farm and his many nieces and nephews. Sharon always felt especially close to her cousin Lois Ann, for all the time they spent together as children. Although they eventually lived very far apart, they always remained special cousins. Sharon had many happy memories of her time in Oklahoma and loved going back for visits as often as she could.
Eventually, her family moved to California, where she was blessed with two more sisters, Diana (Edgington) and Terri (Sawyer). Sharon loved her sisters with all her heart. Each one was special to her and she enjoyed telling “stories” on them, especially her two youngest.
In 1956 she met the love of her life, John Tanachion, while he was serving in the US Air Force. They married August 24, 1957. When John was discharged, they moved to Staten Island, New York, John’s home town. It was there that their first two children were born, daughter Cindy and eldest son John. They eventually moved back to California, to be closer to Sharon’s family, whom she missed very much. Back in California they had two more children, daughter Cheryl, and son Anthony.
Sharon loved her family very much. She enjoyed having everyone over and cooking Sunday dinners, which usually consisted of large bowls of pasta and meatballs, which she learned to make from her Italian mother-in-law, Genevieve, while living in New York. Sharon loved her New York family too. She always said how warm and welcoming they were to this very young girl from California, who had never been so far away from her mom, dad, and sisters. She always remained close to John’s family, especially his brother Freddy and his wife Mary.
While Sharon was small in stature, she was big in spirit. She always enjoyed helping others and giving back. In her younger years, she was an active member of St. Vincent De Paul and was a current member of YLI #117 of Merced. Sharon loved to dance to the oldies and country music. She and John were quite the jitter buggers. Sharon had many wonderful friends, to numerous to mention, she loved them all. Her childhood friends, Bobbi, Betty, Janice, her CHP wives, Ola Gail, Sarah and Suzi all held and extra special place in her heart.
Sharon passed away peaceful at her home, to be with her Lord and Savior, on September 21, 2017. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Guy and Martha Sawyer, her loving husband John and her beloved daughter Cheryl. She leaves behind her daughter, Cindy Souza (David), sons, John (Debbie) and Anthony (Selvia) Tanachion, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
