Avelina Garcia peacefully went to be with the lord on March 15, 2018, at the age of 76, after a two year battle with cancer. She joins her beloved husband of 55 years, Sam Garcia.Avelina attended grammar school in Clint, Texas and high school in Peoria, Arizona. In 1958, her family moved to Merced, California. As a young lady, Avelina worked in agriculture picking grapes, cotton, and peaches. While her children were
young, she worked as a bilingual instructional aide at Margaret Sheehy Elementary School. Avelina was strong in faith and devoted her life to the Catholic Church. For 26 years, she was secretary at Sacred Heart Church until her retirement in 2016. Avelina took on many roles within the church including teacher, coordinator and director of religious education classes, Sacraments Coordinator for Spanish-speaking parents. She was also a Catechist and Master Catechist. In addition to being a lector and eucharistic minister during mass, Avelina participated in clown
ministry, and completed the New Wine Program for Leadership in Ministry. Avelina was a kind and caring woman, who loved spending time with her family and friends. Her passions included painting, sewing, knitting, crafting, listening to classical music, tap dancing, Zumba, visiting Disneyland and attending Los Angeles Dodgers baseball games. She enjoyed traveling and had the wonderful opportunity to journey on a pilgrimage to Spain with her dear friend Fr. Jose Montiel. There she visited Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Fatima, and numerous other cathedrals and museums.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Samuel Garcia and sister, Coco (Robert) Cardon. She is survived by her beloved Yaya, Gabina Villanueva (Paul), seven sisters, three brothers, her six precious children, Edward Garcia (Juana), Daniel Garcia (Linda), Maria Bertalotto (Troy), Lupe Delgado (Martin), Christina Garcia, Avelinda Garcia, 8 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, her Godly partners in crime: Fr. Jesus Reynaga, Esther Pena, Irene Torres and Carolyn Schoopman, and the parishioners of Sacred Heart Church, who blessed her life with love, friendship, and prayers.
The family would like to thank Dr. Jared Paskin, Dr. Sachin Gupta, Dr. Thanh Nguyen, Dr. Hanimireddy Lakireddy, and the
many residents and nurses at Merced’s Mercy Medical Center and Care in Fresno, who gave our mother such wonderful and compassionate care.
A celebration of Avelina’s life will be held on Saturday, March 24th, 2018 at Sacred Heart Church in
Merced. A public viewing will begin at 9:00 am, followed by a Recitation of the Rosary at 9:30am, and concluding with a Mass of Christian Burial
at 10:00 am. Burial will be private. A reception will be held immediately following the mass at Sacred Heart Hall, located next to the church.
