George E. CarterFebruary 15, 1933 ~ June 18, 2017 (age 84)
George Elbert Carter was born on February 15, 1933 to Pete and Margrette Carter. He was one of 14 children. George attended Rusk Middle and High School in Rusk, Texas. After graduation he attended Butler College where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. After graduation, George moved to Los Angeles, California where he met his wife Betty Lou Rocquemore.
George worked in construction in the Los Angeles area for 30 years. He became a foreman while working at Zarn Engineers. From there he worked as a Superintendent for Advanco Engineers building water lines and remained in that position until retirement.
After retirement, George began a career in Real Estate which he dearly loved. He loved the challenge of building, buying and selling property. No challenge was too large, he always found a way to make things happen.
In 1998, he became a member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, in Atwater where his Christian humanitarianism attracted many to him. He was a stubborn, but principled man. Some of his duties at Mount Olive included serving as Chair of the Trustee Board for several years; and serving as Chair of the Mount Olive Scholarship Committee. These were his formal “hats” at Mount Olive, but he was always willing to help in any area that needed his assistance.
George departed this life on June 18, at 6:35 am.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 44 years, Betty L. Carter, two stepsons, Robert and Kirkland Howling (Shanna); four grandchildren, Jasmine, Sophia, Elise and Nathan Howling, all from Los Angeles, CA; one brother Vernell Carter, Arlington, TX and one sister, Myrtle Garmon of Henderson, TX; his church family and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends. George was preceded in death by his parents Pete and Margrette Carter, three sisters, Geneva Taylor, Corrine Waggoner, Virginia Nunley and eight brothers James, Travis, Howard, Charles, Marvin, Pete Jr., Tommy, and J.W. Brother George Carter will be greatly missed.
