Mrs. Hettie Edna Cobb, of Merced, peacefully transitioned to her heavenly home at the age of 83 on January 26, 2018. Hettie was born in Kinston, North Carolina, December 21, 1934, to the late George and Hettie Patrick, the youngest of 11 children. Hettie was preceded in death by 8 of her 10 siblings, Harrison, Wilbert, Lemon (Jack), Mary, Arabella, Matilda, Annie, and Ellen. Hettie retired from JC Penneys where she worked as a sales clerk for 25 years. Most of that time was spent in the men’s department which was a blessing for her husband and three boys. Hettie was a tireless woman that was able to balance time between working at Penneys, getting clothes ready for her husband, feeding the family, and seeing three boys off to school. Before the term “soccer mom”, Hettie could be found driving around in a station wagon to various sports practices and games throughout Northern California. It was common to see her at Cub Scout meetings, other social events, and attending Lodge functions with her husband, Richard.

After the boys' high school graduations through her retirement, she and her husband would find time to visit their boys no matter where they lived in the country. The two of them even made a few road trips to North Carolina to visit their siblings. Although there seem to be a lot going on, Hettie always took time for her favorite thing to do, fishing. This was the family venture to go fishing. You would see Hettie and some or all of the family fishing anywhere from the local lakes around Merced to the Gulf of Alaska. From Monterey Bay to the Merced River. Her husband was in the Air Force and everywhere the family was stationed they found the local fishing holes. It was common at holidays that the room would be filled with laughter from many family fishing stories. Yes we were left out on the lake with nothing but a paddle when the boat did not start, yes she did fall off of a rock and her waders filled with water, and yes it is true a fish did jump into the boat. Even after suffering her first stroke, her goal was to get her strength back so she could get out fishing somewhere.

Left to cherish Hettie’s memories are her loving and devoted husband, Richard Arthur Cobb Sr. of Merced, CA; three sons, Richard Arthur Cobb, Jr. and his wife, Felicia of Sacramento, CA, Eric Maurice Cobb of Stockton, CA, and Glen Alec Cobb and his wife, Kathy of Merced, CA; one brother, George Patrick of Washington D.C.; one sister in law, Ethel Pearl Patrick of Kinston, NC; 8 grandchildren, Kenisha, Raynisha, Ivory, Chad, Ryan, Kate, Mitchell, and Ju’well; 3 great-grandchildren, Julianna, Ja’leah, and Alexander, and a host of nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at Ivers & Alcorn Funeral Home, 901 W. Main Street in Merced. A Homegoing Celebration will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Ivers & Alcorn in Merced. The burial will follow at Merced District Cemetery, 1300 B Street in Merced. Pastor Ronald Dunham will be officiating.
