William Donald Cairncross was born August 8, 1928 in Jamesville, Wisconsin to William and Elvira Cairncross. He entered into death on November 29, 2018 in Merced, California. William was known to most as “Don”. Don and his family left Wisconsin when he was 8 years old in pursue of a better life in California where they made their home in Merced County. Don learned the meaning of hard work at a young age. He worked on various dairies and ranches until he enlisted in the Army where, he served from 1950-1953. He was a proud Korean War veteran. When he was discharged from the Army, he became employed at Bettencourt Ranch. There he worked and provided for his family for over 50 years as an equipment operator. Don married the love of his life, Betty on April 10, 1953 they remained happily married for 65 years. They made their home in Winton and raised 6 children. Don was a loving husband, father and grandfather. When Don was not working, he enjoyed being outdoors with his sons, family and friends, he enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. Even traveling a few times out of state to enjoy a hunting adventure. Don was also an avid sports fan, and knew everything there was to know about each sport he watched. He will always be known as being a forever faithful San Francisco 49er and Chicago Cubs fan. For many years Don enjoyed going to professional football and baseball games with his sons. Don always enjoyed having his home full of family and friends, he was proud of his large family and never met a stranger that he could not have a conversation with whether it be about sports, fishing or his time spent in the service. Don is preceded in death by his wife Betty, daughter Adrienne, sons, Scott, Earl and Ralph, parents William and Elvira, sister Maryanne, brother Chuck, and grandson William. Don survived by his two sons Jay and Kelly (Pamela), seven grandchildren Adam, Bubba, Kolbie, Shana, Alexandra, Samantha and Kiley, seven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and sister Martha.
