Corina Brazil, age 93 passed away September 10th. She was born October 3, 1927 in Gustine to Jose Brazil and Anna (Moniz) Brazil, originally of the Azores.
Corina attended school in Gustine and graduated from Turlock High School in Turlock. She was a cashier at various businesses including Merced College Bookstore. Around 1964 she purchased a Victorian home which she spent many hours restoring, hosting many family gatherings. She later established the first Bed and Breakfast in Merced, the Rambling Rose B & B.
She was a member of the Merced County Historical Society, and Charter Member of The Valley Players. She was a supporter of the arts and sat at the Arbor Gallery information desk.
She was very proud of her Portuguese heritage. She enjoyed gardening, theatre, reading, and writing poetry. She wrote daily to her granddaughter Julia in later years.
Preceded in death by her parents, brothers Joseph and David Brazil, and sister Angie (Brazil) Lewis of Los Banos; her son David Chaves of Montana and grandson Peter Douglas Martinez. Survivors include her children Anna Lee Chaves, Candace (Chaves) Wurthmann, Bernadette (Chaves) Hudson and Valerie (Pryor) Mazany. She leaves grandchildren: Justin, Mariah, Sadie, Joseph, Alysia, Sierra, Angelina, Julia, Aaron, Ben, Elizabeth, Timothy, Daniel, Rebekah, Britney, Derek, Meagan, eight great grandchildren, four great, great grandchildren, one niece and three nephews. Corina also leaves several unrelated children she opened her heart to over the years.
Services will be on Thursday September 23 at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Merced. Rosary will be at 9:30 a.m., Mass at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at Turlock Memorial Park Cemetery, Turlock, CA. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can made in her memory to the Merced County Historical Society or the Merced Multi-Cultural Arts Center.
