DOLORES M SOUZA

February 9, 1924 ~ February 10, 2022 (age 98)

Obituary

Dolores Souza

February 9, 1924 – February 10, 2022

Dolores Souza passed into the loving arms of her Heavenly Father on Thursday, February 10, 2022.

Dolores was born Mary Dolores Bernard in San Jose, California, on February 9, 1924, to João P. Bernardo (John Bernard) and Maria Conceição Rodrigues Marcos Da Silva (Mary Rodrigues) who were Azorean Portuguese immigrants from the island of Pico. Dolores’s father passed away when she was 7 years old, and her mother eventually married James P. Amaral. Dolores was the only daughter in her family, with an older brother, Henry Bernard, and two younger brothers, James and John Amaral.

As a young girl, Dolores enjoyed roller-skating and going to the movie theatre. As she grew up, Dolores loved getting her hair and nails done, something she continued to like to do her whole life. She grew up on 25th Street in San Jose and was raised attending the Five Wounds Portuguese National Church. Dolores was the 1939 queen for the I.E.S. of San Jose, California.

Dolores married Manuel Marks Souza from Hopeton/Snelling, California, in 1941. As dairy farmers, Manuel and Dolores raised a family, first in Snelling and then in Merced. They were blessed with four children: Richard, Harold, Manuel Jr., and Jeannette. Manuel and Dolores always had an open door, supported and cared for many people, both friends and family.  In their later years, Manuel and Dolores also lived in Nevada and in Southern California. After her husband’s passing in 1986, Dolores eventually settled permanently in the Merced area.

Dolores found pleasure in the ocean, eating seafood, flowers, gardening, pets, watching TV and movies, singing, music, reading, and keeping up on current events. In her later years, Dolores, who always believed in God, came to fully understand that Jesus gave his life for her, and she accepted his gift of salvation, putting her trust solely in him. Her strong faith nurtured a love for reading the Bible, praying, and singing praise songs.

Dolores was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers; her husband, Manuel; her much-loved grandson, Shane Marks Souza; and her beloved son, Harold Marks Souza. She is survived by three children and ten grandchildren:  Richard (Barbara) and his daughter, Jamie; Harold’s children, Marc, Stacie, Joshua, and Jenifer; Manuel Jr. and his son, Zebulon; and Jeannette (John) and her children, Dwayne, Marcus, Darren, and Natalie; also, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. She is loved by many and touched many lives.
