David Robert Brown

November 2, 1940 ~ December 18, 2021 (age 81)

David Robert Brown (11/2/1940 – 12/18/2021), 81, Livingston, CA

Dave passed away 12/18/2021 surrounded by his wife of 57 years and his two daughters.  Dave was born on 11/2/1940 in Portola, California to James R. and Ann Brown.  He spent a very happy childhood in the mountains, fishing and hunting with his father, and he was the first Scout in Plumas County to earn the rank of Eagle Scout.  He graduated from Portola High School in 1958 and went on to study at CSU, Chico, where he earned a Master’s degree, and University of Oregon (Eugene).  He spent summers in the late 1950s and early 1960s working as fire control in Yellowstone and Yosemite National Parks.

Dave married Marylan Catt in 1964, at which time they settled in Livingston.  He taught U.S. History at Livingston High School for 35 years, from 1964 to 1999, where his daughters were also his students.  He was a mentor teacher and also an instructor for the Partnership Academy.  He taught night classes for Merced College for 15 years.  He taught summer school for many years and also worked several summers at Gallo as a weighmaster.

Dave loved his family above all else, followed closely by his many friends.  He was a 49er Faithful and never missed a Niner game.  He loved anything peanut butter and enjoyed playing cards, dice, and other games with his family.  For many years he was into photography and took countless photos on various vacations throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Dave will be remembered for his fantastic sense of humor and bringing levity to all occasions.  He had many nicknames, including Tiger Dave to his high school football teammates, Buzzy Brown to his students, and Macho Man to his family.  He taught his daughters from very young ages to tell everyone he was “the greatest guy in the whole wide world”, and he was.

Dave is survived by his wife, Marylan Brown; daughters, Julie (Larry) Christensen and Suzan Brown O’Grady; sister, Phyllis Sundquist; grandchildren, Jared (Kimberly) Christensen, Ryan (Dani) Christensen, and Michelle Christensen; and great-grandchildren, Elijah, Cruz, and Elia Christensen.  He is preceded in death by his parents.

The family will have a private graveside service, followed by a Celebration of Life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dave Brown’s name to LHS Student Support Projects, 1617 Main Street, Livingston, CA 95334.
