James Michael Raymond (78) of Atwater, CA passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 5th, 2022.
James Raymond, better known as Mike, was born on October 16th 1943 in Madera. He graduated from Madera High school and went on to Fresno City College. While at Fresno City College, he met, fell in love with and married Pamela Maude Myers. In 1967 Mike started his law enforcement career with LA County Sheriff’s Department before moving with his wife and two daughters to Merced. He worked briefly with Merced Police Department, before finding his place with the Merced County Sheriff’s Department, where he moved up the ranks quickly. In 1982, he was named Lawman of the year for the County of Merced. When he made Captain, he took over running the Corrections department. And later helped develop the Honor Farm facility at Sandy Mush. He went on to achieve the rank of Assistant Sheriff and continued to run the corrections Department until his retirement in the mid-90’s. Afterward he volunteered with Atwater Police Department, contributing another twenty years of dutiful service to his community. During it all, Mike was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, and role-model.
Mike Raymond was an imposing figure to many, but behind his gruff façade he hid an immeasurable depth of compassion for his friends and family. He leaves behind shoes not easily filled.
Mike Raymond is survived by his wife Pam, daughter Kari and son in law Donald, daughter Jennifer, nephew John, eight grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.
