Joyce Frances Furman

August 8, 1937 ~ July 12, 2021 (age 83)



Joyce Furman, 83 of Merced passed away on July 12th, 2021. Joyce was born in Monterey, CA to Howard and Jean Hawkins. Growing up in Monterey she had many adventures with her childhood friend Rusty. and riding to school in the sidecar of her dad’s motorcycle. Joyce played golf throughout her early years and won many trophies. She attended school in Monterey and then went to Monterey Peninsula College where she graduated with an art degree.

After graduation she went to work at the Language Institute. At one of the mixer’s she met her future husband William Furman of Dos Palos. They were married and had three children, Lynne, Michael and Steven. They resided in Dos Palos for over 30 years.

Joyce always had a love for animals. While raising her family she would bring home dogs, cats, horses, monkeys and guinea pigs! There was never a shortage of pet’s so it was perfect that she worked for the local veterinarian for a number of years. Joyce had her faithful dog Rusty almost until the end.

Joyce loved the mountains. After her husband passed away she moved from Dos Palos to the mountains by Yosemite. She had many adventures with her friends and family there. She played guitar with some friends and waded in creeks with other friends.

After leaving the mountains to come back to Merced area she found her spot in Cayucos, where many shells, rocks and driftwood were collected and brought home and relocated many, many times!

She said that when she was there it felt like coming home. Joyce loved to get calamari and sit in her car at sunset and watch the waves.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Jean Hawkins of Monterey, her husband William Furman of Dos Palos, and her grandson Darren Montgomery of Bozeman, Montana.

She is survived by her daughter Lynne Furman Sternhagen of Bozeman, MT, her husband Dennis, granddaughter Ashley; son Michael Furman of Merced, wife Linda, granddaughter Patrice; son Steven Furman of Merced, wife Cristy, grandson Brandon and six great-grandchildren and also her cousin Sandi Funseth.

No services are planned. Donations in Joyce’s name may be made to the American Humane Society or your local animal shelter.
