Maureen Roberta (Mantle) Kolda passed away June 30, 2020 in Manteca, CA. She was 95. Born on September 8, 1924 to John K. Mantle and Mary (Kolich) Mantle in "Haywards" (later Castro Valley), CA, she spent her youngest years in Kansas City, MO, then returned to CA to live with her grandparents in Castro Valley so she could attend St. Elizabeth’s High School in Oakland; she was a graduate of Dominican College (now University) in San Rafael, CA. She was the oldest of 4 children.
Maureen was the loving wife of Delmar L. Kolda of Weed, CA. They were introduced to each other by the parish priest in Weed where both their families lived, and soon it was clear to them that God had a plan for them together. They were married in 1945 at the end of WWII.
Their first home together was in San Francisco where the first 6 of their children were born. They were members of Holy Name of Jesus Church in San Francisco and part of the Holy Name of Jesus School community.
In 1963 they moved to San Leandro and had one more child. They belonged to Our Lady of Grace Parish in Castro Valley where Maureen was a member of the Women’s Guild, sang in the choir, and where she led RCIA groups for decades. She also took under her wing refugees, single people without families, and many who needed a home or a family meal.
When they moved to Merced in 1997, Maureen continued her work with RCIA at St. Patrick’s Church for many years. Every day she and Del attended the Rosary devotional and Mass.
Being a mother was her Job One, but Maureen was also an avid seamstress, sewing wedding dresses for daughters and daughters-in-law; a talented painter; a creative cook; a wonderful mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother; and a mean Scrabble player whom few could beat.
Maureen was preceded in death by brothers Kenneth and Gregory Mantle, sister Patricia Mantle, and one son-in-law Louis Castello. She leaves her husband Del, children Steve (Mary Anne), Mary Castello, Richard Kolda (Kim), Catherine Strommen (Curt), Theresa Poole (Robert), Peter Kolda (Marie), and John Kolda (Chrissie). She also leaves 19 grandchildren and soon-to-be 30 great-grandchildren, a total of 100 descendants and spouses.
Maureen will be remembered for her fierce devotion to her husband, to her family, and to her faith. Her quick wit, generosity, hospitality, and her prayerful holiness will be deeply missed but remembered at every family gathering.
