Long time Merced resident, Percy Hill passed away on March 9, 2022 at the age of 87. He was born on November 14, 1934 in Epes, Alabama to Percy and Carrie (Russell) Hill.

Percy was raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee and attended Howard High School. In 1955, Percy enlisted in the United States Air Force and retired in 1981 as a Senior Master Sergeant. Percy was an instructor and an instructor supervisor of the 514th Field Training Detachment at Castle Air Force Base.

After serving 26 years and retiring from the Air Force, Percy earned his bachelor’s degree at California State University, Stanislaus where he majored in Liberal Studies.

Percy was dedicated to serving his community. In 1976, he joined the Merced Golden Lions Club and served as first, second and third vice-president. In 1979, he received double honors as he was awarded Lion of the Year and was installed as president. In 2011, he served another term as president of the Lions Club. In 2017, Percy received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for his 40 years of dedicated humanitarian service. He was the first recipient of the Merced Golden Lions Club to receive this prestigious award.

He was a two-time past chairman for Sheehy Elementary School Advisory Committee, a member of the district school advisory committee and Black Heritage Month program committee of Castle Air Force Base, Boy Scout coordinator for Sheehy Cub Pack 308, president of Merced Community Civic Organization, member of the Merced County NAACP Branch 1047, and secretary and Past Master of Cornerstone Lodge F&AM No. 111.

He was a faithful member of Atwater United Methodist Church where he served as a choir member as well as a member of the Board of Trustees.

Preceded in death by his parents Percy and Carrie Hill, and his sister Dorothy (Farrow) Hill. He leaves behind to celebrate his life his four children: daughter Audrey (Hadnagy), daughter Rosalinde (Dottin), son Glenn, and daughter Gail; two grandsons, Ryan and Anthony; one great-grandson Ahmad; sister Bernice (Clark) and brother Luther; and a host of other relatives and many dear friends.

Visitation will be Wednesday, March 23rd from 4pm to 8pm and Celebration of Life services will be held Thursday, March 24th from 10am to 11:30am. Both services will be held at Ivers & Alcorn Funeral Home, 3050 N. Winton Way in Atwater.

Burial with military honors to follow at 2:00 pm at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella, California.

Repast will be held at Atwater United Methodist Church 2550 Linden Street in Atwater from 4pm to 8pm – Fireside Room.
